After the Mālama Honua festivities at Magic Island on Saturday June 17, over 10,000 visitors made their way down to Our Kakaʻako to celebrate the homecoming of voyaging canoe Hōkūleʻa and commemorate the dedication of SALT at Our Kakaʻako and the return of Honolulu Night + Market.
Our Kakaʻako teamed up with the Polynesian Voyaging Society and Street Grindz to sponsor the free Hōkūleʻa homecoming event which featured over 50 food trucks and retail vendors, three stages of entertainment, street performers, a fashion show, and a screening of Mālama Honua voyage highlights and Disney’s “Moana.”
The event also recognized the hard work that has helped develop SALT into a community gathering place. Artists who have contributed towards the creation of SALT’s unique look were honored at the event, including POW! WOW! Hawaiʻi co-founder Kamea Hadar. Other recognized artists included Matthew James, Matt and Roxy Ortiz, and Santiago Otani.
This event was a special way to bring the community together to celebrate the momentous, historic occasion for the Hōkūleʻa and for the lāhui Hawaiʻi in the innovative Our Kakaʻako.
KS photographer Michael Young captured some of the highlights of the event. Read more about the festivities that took place.
