O‘ahu Ipukukui Makahiki

October 28, 2014

The Hawaiian Culture-Based Education Department’s Ipukukui Program is a weeklong educational experience which promotes cultural connectedness through project-based learning for haumāna – grades 6-11 – who’ve completed programs in KS’ summer Exploration Series

This fall, the learning was focused on the makahiki season. Throughout the week students participated in various learning activities including lessons on ‘ike Hawai‘I (Hawaiian knowledge), huaka‘i to ‘āina-based learning sites, discussions with guest speakers, collaborative work, and a culminating cultural project.

Recently, the five Ipukukui programs on O‘ahu came together for a single hō‘ike at Ke‘ehi Lagoon Park. Students from each region presented their projects to ‘ohana and guests, held makahiki game exhibitions, and had a chance to rekindle friendships made during summer Exploration Series programs.
