KS Maui ‘Ohana Welcomes Hōkūleʻa Crew

August 18, 2017

Polynesian voyaging canoes Hōkūleʻa and Hikianalia departed Oahu’s Sand Island Wednesday to begin their six-month Mahalo, Hawaiʻi Sail. When the canoes reached their first port at Maui’s Honolua Bay on Thursday, the KS Maui ‘ohana welcomed the hui wa‘a to their Pukalani campus where the crew planted koa trees in the schools’ Ulu Koa Grove. Crew members then shared voyaging stories with students and the community. On Friday, KSM faculty, staff and the campus’ 1,100 haumāna bussed down to Honolua Bay to view the voyaging canoes and celebrate the start of their statewide voyage. After leaving Maui, the canoes will continue to approximately 40 additional ports and connect with nearly 80 communities throughout the pae ‘āina.
