Kamehameha Schools kumu, haumāna and staff take part in Hōkūleʻa welcome and launch ceremonies in Alaska

June 21, 2023

Hōkūleʻa has set sail from Juneau, Alaska, embarking on its most ambitious voyage yet. Moananuiākea: A Voyage for Earth will cover 43,000 nautical miles of the Pacific Ocean over a span of nearly four years. A specially trained team of Kamehameha Schools Kapālama kumu, haumāna and members of the Hoʻokahua Cultural Vibrancy Group led the Hawaiʻi protocols when Hōkūleʻa arrived and departed from Juneau, Alaska in the ancestral lands and waters of the Áak'w Kwáan clan of the Tlingit Tribe. This is part of Kamehameha Schools’ nearly 50-year kuleana as culture bearers and heritage keepers for the Hōkūleʻa.
