Hūlili – KS Maui’s summer outreach program – recently celebrated its 10th anniversary by welcoming 145 students from Grades 6-12 to the Pukalani campus.
During the four-week program students learn about their Hawaiian heritage through huaka‘i, distance learning and various classes that teach Hawaiian values through crafts and games. Students also attend classes to build their academic and transitional skills.
The theme for this year’s four-week program is “Nā Mo‘olelo o Maui.” The program began with a chapel service focusing on being a good Samaritan. Students and teachers reminded everyone through song to try and be like Jesus Christ. The service was followed by a visit from Maui comedienne and storyteller Kathy Collins and her pidgin-speaking alter ego Tita, who captivated the haumāna with her stories of Maui.
Middle School Hawaiian language kumu Kaponoʻai Molitau then engaged the students in stories of their ancestors and challenged the students to a chanting game with hand motions, called “Kamali‘i I ke ole.” The day’s program served as a preview of the storytelling and cultural activities that were yet to come.
