KS’ Hoʻomakaʻikaʻi summer program recently culminated with a hōʻike at Kekūhaupiʻo Gym at the KS Kapālama campus. Students showed their ʻohana what they learned about Hawaiian culture during the week through songs and dances.
Ho‘omāka‘ika‘i helps soon-to-be sixth graders embrace their Hawaiian culture and identity by introducing them to foundational values and practices through a study of ahupua‘a. Activities during the week-long boarding program include working in a kalo patch, fishpond restoration, mele and hula.
Hundreds of non-KS elementary school students from all over the state and the continental United States took part in the program. One student came all the way from France! For many students this will be a week in their lives that they will remember fondly.
KS photographer Michael Young captured the following photos at the hōʻike. If your division or campus has pics to share, please send them along with background information and captions to miyoung@ksbe.edu.
