Honoring Charles Reed Bishop and Dee Jay Mailer -  KS Hawaiʻi

February 7, 2014

Kamehameha Schools Hawaiʻi students, faculty, and staff honored and remembered Charles Reed Bishop on January 24, the day before his birthday. Special guests at the convocation included KS chief executive officer Dee Jay Mailer, her husband Don, vice president of campus education Dr. Rod Chamberlain, and trustee Robert Nobriga.

The convocation included scriptures and prayers led by the elementary, middle, and high school keiki kahu, mele from the elementary and middle schools, and a special play written and directed by middle school librarian Crystella Kauka, featuring kumu Ipolani Wright’s seventh grade social studies students.

Mailer gave an inspiring haʻiʻōlelo about Bishop which called all present to live as pono a life as he did. After her remarks, a surprise presentation was held to mahalo her for all the work she has done as the alakaʻi of Kamehameha Schools. Mailer is retiring from KS in late March.

Each class presented a floral lei and a feather lei was also gifted to her. Head of school Dr. Holoua Stender, spoke about her leadership and led the singing of a mele inoa (name song) entitled "Ka ʻŌhiʻa" he wrote in her honor. The convocation came to a close with a pule by kahu Ruth Farrell and an enthusiastic singing of "Sons of Hawaiʻi."

If your division or campus has pics to share, please send them along with background information and captions to ksonline@ksbe.edu. Mahalo to KSH chaplain Ruth Farrel for sharing this story, to technology kumu Kerry Kamisato for capturing the event in photos, and to administrative coordinator Dannielle Iuta for helping with the captions. More event photos can be found in the middle school photo gallery.
