Haumāna from KS Kapālama Kula Haʻahaʻa learn business acumen during Our Kakaʻako huakaʻi

April 4, 2023

Entrepreneurship was the focus as over 150 KS Kapālama 6th graders recently embarked on a huakaʻi to one of KS’ commercial properties, SALT at Our Kakaʻako. The haumāna are learning about creating their own business and what better way to gain ʻike than meeting with three local entrepreneurs?

Chuck Wakeman, owner of Butcher & Bird; Monica Toguchi, owner of Highway Inn; and Kiani Wong, owner of Kiʻikau Printers all offered manaʻo on what it takes to survive and thrive in Hawaiʻi’s business environment.

The huakaʻi also included numerous educational activities. Haumāna learned about the history of the area, the shopping center, and the vibrant art murals located throughout the neighborhood. The day concluded with a homemade ham sandwich and pickle slices from Butcher & Bird.

The business advice and learning opportunities should serve the students well as each is tasked with developing start-ups to be presented during their culminating Papa ʻEono Pop-Up: Mei Mākeke later this school year.
