Kamehameha Schools was founded by the will of Bernice Pauahi Bishop, the great-granddaughter of Kamehameha the Great.

Kamehameha Schools staffers, students, alumni and community members across the state honored the life and legacy of Ke Aliʻi Bernice Pauahi Bishop with song, worship and dance at Founder’s Day celebrations statewide. Most of the events took place on Friday, December 17, while a few took place on Sunday, December 19, Pauahi’s birthday. This year marked the 190th anniversary of the birth of Princess Pauahi, a woman of intelligence, compassion and foresight who understood that her kuleana as a Hawaiian ali‘i was to serve her people. Kamehameha Schools was established in 1887 by the will of the princess to improve the capability and well-being of Hawaiians through education.
