KS Kapālama fifth grade play

April 24, 2014

The great, broad ocean... Modern humans were first established in Africa and then migrated all over Earth to establish diverse civilizations but how did they reach Hawai`i? Was it an accident or did the early Polynesians discover the planet’s most isolated land mass by using navigation skills that were more advanced than those possessed by any other people?

The Polynesian Voyaging Society built the voyaging canoe Hōkūle‘a to prove that ancient Hawaiians were skilled navigators who viewed the ocean as a pathway connecting islands and cultures. Fifth grade students studied and presented this incredible story of discovery in a play that combined research, writing, musical composition, costume design and performance skills. The play was performed for the elementary school, ohana and members of the Hōkūle‘a.
