Kamehameha Schools was founded by the will of Bernice Pauahi Bishop, the great-granddaughter of Kamehameha the Great.

January 25 marked the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Reed Bishop, husband of Ke Ali‘i Bernice Pauahi Bishop, and the driving force in the creation of the Kamehameha Schools. On his birthday, KS haumāna and alaka‘i paid tribute to him at Maunaʻala, the sacred burial place of aliʻi. A stone monument to Bishop is inscribed “Builder of the State – Friend of Youth – Benefactor of Hawai‘i.”
