On Monday, October 3, 8th graders had the opportunity to participate in a Google Hangout “Classroom to Canoe Connection” with a crew member of Hōkuleʻa, which is currently docked in New York. KSM Class of 2008 graduate Kaipo Kiaha, who is now a Hōkuleʻa crew member, gave haumāna a digital tour of the waʻa, explained what it is like to be a crew member and what life is like aboard the canoe, and answered students’ questions. It was an awesome, authentic learning experience that directly connected students with their culture through the use of 21st century technology.
