A three-day celebration honoring the ali'i who would become Kamehameha III was recently held at his birth site on the grounds of the Outrigger Keauhou Resort on Hawaiʻi Island. The 21st Annual Tribute to Kamehameha III – A Birthday Celebration for Ka Lani Kauikeaouli kicked-off with a private hoʻokupu ceremony hosted by the Daughters of Hawai'i, stewards of the birth site. This year, the celebration highlighted the efforts of Hawaiian immersion school Pūnana Leo o Kona and featured a panel discussion in ‘ōlelo Hawaiʻi and ended with a virtual concert featuring the sites and sounds of Hawaiʻi Island. Kamehameha Schools’ policy is to give preference to applicants of Hawaiian ancestry to the extent permitted by law.
