Kamehameha Schools honored its namesake, Kamehameha the Great and great-grandfather of founder Ke Ali‘i Bernice Pauahi Bishop, during a number of events as part of the 2016 King Kamehameha Day Celebration.
Representatives from across the KS organization took part in the annual Lei Draping Ceremony on Friday, June 11 at Aliʻiōlani Hale, presenting a 30-foot garland created by the hands of many Kawaiaha‘o Plaza staffers. The Administration Group coordinated the making of the lei which was braided together with laua‘e leaves, green and red lāʻī leaves, palapalai fern, along with strands sewn from the hala fruit. Lei materials were gathered by staff members from KS properties on O‘ahu.
Other festivities included the 100th Anniversary King Kamehameha Celebration Floral Parade, which KS was honored to be the title sponsor of. Staffers from Strategy and Innovation, Community Engagement and Resources, along with the Pauahi Foundation assisted in coordinating KS’ parade participation which included the KS Kapālama Warrior Marching Band and Color Guard, KSK varsity cheerleaders, along with trolley riders consisting of alumni and community collaborators.
