Kamehameha Schools Kapālama recently hosted a three-day conference for members of the Hawaii Association of Middle Schools (HAMS) and the national Association for Middle Level Education (AMLE). The event’s theme was, “Energize Your Middle Level Leadership!”
More than 60 local private and public middle school educators participated in the conference held at the campus’ Kaʻiwakīloumoku Hawaiian Cultural Center. Attendees had the opportunity to experience 20 workshops and hear from leading national middle school educators.
Presenters included Dru Tomlin – AMLE’s director of Middle Level Services, Nikki Woodson – superintendent of schools for the Metropolitan School District of Washington Township, and Paul Dunford – Middle School, Leadership and Special Education specialist with the Maryland Department of Education.
KSK Middle School Principal Dr. Puanani Kaʻai, Vice Principal Dr. Kyle Atabay and Curriculum and Assessment Coordinator Dr. Erika Cravalho presented a workshop describing the middle school’s progressive “classrooms-without-walls” learning environment.
