Onipaʻa and Mai Poina 2014

September 11, 2014

Kamehameha Schools recently took part in two community events honoring Queen Liliʻuokalani, the last reigning monarch of the Hawaiian Kingdom.

Onipaʻa (steadfast) celebrated the queen’s birthday and Mai Poina (never forget) was a historical walking tour illustrating the events leading up to the 1893 overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom.

Both events took place on the grounds of ʻIolani Palace and were filled with people taking in the Hawaiian entertainment, activities, and information on Hawaiian organizations, history and culture.

KS is a founding member of the Hawaiʻi Ponoʻī Coalition, sponsor of the events. The coalition was formed in 2007 to educate those who live in and visit the islands about Hawaiʻi’s true history, its Native Hawaiian people, and their unique culture.

KS photographer Michael Young was on hand to capture the highlights of the event in the photos below.
