KAKA‘AKO, HI (June 17, 2020) — With the re-emergence of dining and retail, the community is returning to places like SALT at Our Kaka‘ako. As people adapt to this new normal, they all need to be reminded that we are in this recovery together. SALT at Our Kaka‘ako, Kamehameha Schools and POW! POW! Hawaii have partnered together to share messages of mana‘olana — hope — to visitors, as they visit the center.
Twenty hand painted signs were recently installed at SALT at Our Kaka’ako, designed by POW! POW! Hawaii, with messages including “Love,” “We’re in this Together,” “Hawai‘i Strong,” “Compassion” and more. POW! POW! Hawaii is a gathering of contemporary artists that engages with the broader community in the process and creation of art, and known for its annual celebration painting murals in the urban neighborhood for people to enjoy.
“We want our visitors to feel welcome, as they safely visit SALT at Our Kaka‘ako,” said Dixie Diga, General Manager of SALT at Our Kaka‘ako. “We thank the artists of POW! POW! for sharing their time on behalf of our community.”
“Caring for the well-being of our tenants and community is a top priority for Kamehameha Schools. Our goal of this initiative is to share uplifting and positive messages as Hawai‘i’s economy begins to recover,” said Director of Asset Management for KS’ Commercial Real Estate Division Jeffrey Mau.
“I think the nature of art is that it shows a human touch,” said POW! POW! Hawaii artist Jeff Gress. “People can see the spirit behind the work that they do and it’s really that human spirit that’s relayed.”
He has seen how people connect to the many urban murals that POW! WOW! has contributed over the years to Our Kaka‘ako.
“It’s really great to work with Kamehameha Schools, especially with the reemergence of all this dining and retail,” he said. “So it’s really nice to be able to see some of those businesses come back open and see people being able to support them again.”
SALT at Our Kaka‘ako is open and serving the community. The center follows CDC and state Department of Health protocols and will continue to apply industry best practices to meet health and safety standards, such as regular cleaning and disinfecting, and added safety signage to help with social distancing. Visitors are required to wear face masks when visiting the center and asked to do the following to help prevent the spread of COVID-19:
