OUR KAKA‘AKO, HAWAI‘I (April 28, 2021) — May Day is Lei Day in Hawai‘i and SALT at Our Kaka‘ako marks this special island celebration by showcasing a variety of art forms throughout the day, on May 1st. Starting at 10 a.m., enjoy a “Lei of Art” strung together throughout SALT, with live music, hula, street dance groups, a lei making demonstration and more, along with the continuation of the Art on the Block scavenger hunt at SALT.
As part of the recently launched Art on the Block contest, Auahi Street will be closed to vehicle traffic so guests can dance in the street and admire SALT’s art from a unique viewpoint. It is the perfect opportunity for guests and dance groups to take photos and record their dance moves at the street mural. To enter the contest, participants must post their dance videos taken in front of the mural and tag SALT by using @saltourkakaako and #SALTArtOntheBlock.
Hawaiian music performances are scheduled between Auahi Street and throughout SALT starting at 10 a.m. While enjoying the music, guests can also view the wide array of murals created by talented local and global artists located within The Barn and around SALT. Other scheduled performances include dance and hula throughout the day, around SALT’s dynamic artwork. Fun activities planned include:
10 a.m. - 12 p.m.: Singer Denny Ono
10 a.m. - 1 p.m.: Lei Making Demonstration in The Barn
12 - 1 p.m.: McKinley Dance Team
3 - 5 p.m.: Singer Jason Midro
5 - 6 p.m.: Halau ‘O Napuala‘ikauika‘iu, under the direction of Kumu Hula Sallie Yoza
6 - 8 p.m.: Singer Daniel Nakashima
Follow @SaltOurKakaako on social media for the latest updates on the Lei Day art celebration. As always, those who visit the center are asked to wear face masks. Social distancing guidelines will be followed throughout SALT.
Lei Day is also the perfect time to discover the collection of outdoor art at SALT for a chance to win in the Art on the Block scavenger hunt. It’s a fun and educational contest that runs through June, offering a chance to win a $100 gift card of the winner’s choice from among the participating SALT merchants. There will be two winners announced monthly. Please follow @SaltOurKakaako on social media for complete details, updates and scavenger hunt questions.
As an example of what to expect throughout the duration of the contest, scavenger hunt participants may be asked to find the answer to a specific question about one of the center’s beautiful murals, record themselves striking a yoga pose in front of a specific painting or take a selfie photo in front of a particular piece of artwork. Participants can then share their “answer” by posting and tagging @SaltOurKakaako. Community members can get a head start on the contest by visiting SALT’s website to learn about more than a dozen unique murals in and around the center.
“Those looking for a place to enjoy May Day in a beautiful, open-air setting are invited to spend the day at SALT, where we’ve lined up a host of safely planned socially distanced activities to celebrate culture and art,” said SALT General Manager Dixie Diga. “In addition to a day of special performances, guests can also participate in the center’s recently launched Art on the Block contest. Our restaurants, shops and businesses will help to make your visit complete.”
While guests enjoy Lei Day at SALT and hunt for the Art on the Block, they can also explore more than 40 shops, restaurants and service providers, many locally owned. Customers can find everything from Hawaiian, Korean, Vietnamese, Filipino and Japanese cuisine, as well as brews, vinyl records, film photography, freshly made ice cream, a deli, vintage clothing, surf and urban fashions and more at SALT at Our Kaka‘ako.
