Public Invited to Volunteer at Our Kaka‘ako and Surfrider Foundation Earth Day Community Clean Up Saturday, April 24

HONOLULU -- Adults, students and children are invited to volunteer at Our Kaka‘ako’s Mālama ‘Āina Earth Day Community Clean Up event on Saturday, April 24, from 9:30 a.m. to noon in the nine-block
mauka neighborhood of Our Kaka‘ako and Mother Waldron Park. The event is being held in partnership with the nonprofit Surfrider Foundation.

Our Kaka‘ako Mālama ‘Āina Earth Day Community Clean Up Event Schedule:

  • 9:30 to 10 a.m.: Check-in at The Barn at 327 Keawe St. Receive map, gloves and
  • trash bag.
  • 10 to 11 a.m.: Community clean-up (see attached neighborhood map).
  • 11 a.m. to noon: Return to The Barn for mahalo gift and grab ‘n go snack bag. Visit

"We are committed to being responsible stewards of the ‘āina and doing our part to protect it for future generations,” said Serge Krivatsy, Kamehameha Schools commercial real estate director of planning and development. “We are pleased to partner with the Surfrider Foundation and provide the community with this opportunity to come together and care for our environment in a safe manner.”
Doorae Shin, Surfrider Foundation O‘ahu chapter coordinator, said, "Earth Day is a worldwide celebration that connects us to our collective responsibility to care for our planet. Surfrider Foundation O‘ahu is happy to partner on this event to help take care of our Kaka‘ako community and protect our land and ocean from pollution. Cleanups are an incredible way to take care of our community and to raise awareness about the impact we all have on our environment and to work towards making that impact as positive as possible.”

Volunteers will either register online at OurKakaako.com/EarthDay or when they check-in at The Barn at SALT at Our Kaka‘ako between 9:30 and 10:00 a.m. Participants will receive a map, gloves and a
trash bag before fanning out in search of litter. Afterwards, they will place their bags of trash at the designated drop-off location at the edge of Mother Waldron Park near the corner of Cooke and Pohukaina Streets. Volunteers will then return to The Barn at 11:00 a.m. for a mahalo gift and grab n’ go snack bag. They will be able to learn about caring for the earth from mauka to makai at the Surfrider Foundation’s educational resources tent set up outside The Barn. Volunteers can also visit the pop-up tables of Our Kaka‘ako merchants inside The Barn.

COVID-19 social distancing guidelines will be in place throughout the event, and all participants will be required to wear face masks. The Our Kaka‘ako Mālama ‘Āina Earth Day Community Clean Up is
sponsored by the Kaiāulu ‘o Kaka‘ako Owners Association.
