Community Invited to Free Pop Up Music Concert in Our Kaka‘ako Featuring Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award-Winning and Nominated Artists
Vaihi, and contemporary Hawaiian music artist, Ben Kama, perform Saturday, July 24

Hawaiian music takes center stage at Our Kaka‘ako with Nā Hōkū Hanohano award-winning group Vaihi and award-nominated musician Ben Kama performing at a free summer Pop Up Music event on Saturday, July 24. Families, friends and neighbors are invited to get outdoors and enjoy contemporary and traditional Hawaiian music from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Kaloko‘eli Courtyard, the small lawn area next to H Mart Kaka‘ako and in front of The Flats at Pu‘unui at 440 Keawe Street.

“This summer, we are excited to continue hosting fun and safe community events for the whole ‘ohana and neighborhood,” said Serge Krivatsy, Kamehameha Schools commercial real estate director of planning and development. “Hawaiian music and local entertainment are central to our goal of sharing and honoring culture, and bringing the joy of live music back into the community.”

Vaihi includes members: Aaron Kaonohi, Bruce Naluai, Cody Hashimoto and Vaiari‘i Kaonohi. The name, Vaihi, is Tahitian for “Hawai‘i” and the group is well-known for their fusion of reggae, soul, hip hop, blues, funk, a cappella, and Hawaiian music. Their signature backyard, local music experience is translated on stage when performing songs from 10 released albums across the world and in Hawai‘i.

Ben Kama is a contemporary Hawaiian music artist and 2021 Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award nominee. Playing the ‘ukulele since he was 5-years-old, Ben’s love for music is exemplified through years of performing in local venues across the state. A devout family man and husband, Ben’s music is traditional in nature and passionate in execution. Ben is a finalist for the Hawaiian EP (“Extended Play”) of the Year for his EP “A Timeless Hymn (Hawaiian Version)” at this year’s Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards.

Participating Our Kaka‘ako merchants will also feature their offerings at pop up tables at the event. The public is encouraged to bring beach chairs and mats to sit out on the lawn.
