Founder’s Day 2019

Kamehameha Schools staffers, students, alumni and community members across the state honored the life and legacy of Ke Aliʻi Bernice Pauahi Bishop with song, worship and dance at Founder’s Day celebrations statewide. Most of the events took place on December 19, Pauahi’s birthday. Kamehameha Schools was established in 1887 by the will of the princess to improve the capability and well-being of Hawaiians through education.

KAWAIAHAʻO PLAZA – Hundreds of Kawaiahaʻo Plaza staffers celebrated Founder’s Day at Kawaiahaʻo Church where Princess Pauahi once worshiped. Above, Kealakūlia Director Kehaulani Puʻu, Community Engagement and Resources Sr. Director Kamuela Cobb Adams and Kealapono Director Nani Fujiwara present hoʻokupu (honored gifts) to mahalo Pauahi.




KS Communications Manager Andrea Oka, Digital Innovation Manager Andreas Arvman and Community and Government Relations Manager ʻOlu Campbell present their hoʻokupu adorned with red roses – said to be Pauahi’s favorite flower.




Janis Kane – who recently retired from KS as senior director of HR Planning, Compensation and Benefits – and Kealaiwikuamo‘o Solutions Engineer Wyatt Bartlett, each did a heluhelu Baibala (scripture reading).




Recent KS retiree Elizabeth Hokada – former chief investment officer of KS’ Financial Assets Division – shares hoʻomanaʻo (reflections) on her path to KS and how honored she feels to be among the those who have lifted up the lāhui through Pauahi’s legacy.




KAMEHAMEHA SCHOOLS KAPĀLAMA – The KS Kapālama ‘ohana celebrated its annual Founder’s Day at Kekūhaupi‘o Gym. Above, high school seniors and kindergarteners form a procession into the gym before the event – a Founder’s Day tradition.

MAUNA ‘ALA – It is a Founder’s Day tradition for KS Kapālama seniors to honor Princess Pauahi at Mauna ‘Ala – her final resting place. The service includes more than 450 haumāna.

KAUAʻI – KS Regional Director for Kauaʻi and Niʻihau Buffy Trugillo (center) and her team welcomed KS leaders to the community Founder's Day celebration at the Kauaʻi War Memorial Convention Hall. Present to honor Pauahi were: CEO Jack Wong; trustees Elliot Mills, Lance Wilhelm, Crystal Rose and Micah Kāne; and Pauahi Foundation Executive Director Pono Maʻa.

ALUMNI – KS alumni from Oʻahu to Oregon gathered to celebrate and honor Pauahi. The KS Alumni Association East Hawai‘i Region Māmalahoe Chapter commemorated its Founder’s Day at the KS Hawai’i campus.
