Charles Reed Bishop Founder’s Day

On Friday, January 25, the KS ‘ohana celebrated the birth of Charles Reed Bishop – Husband of Ke Ali’I Pauahi, and a driving force in the creation of Kamehameha Schools. Bishop not only helped found KS, but supported many other schools, helping to shape the future of education in Hawai’i. KS HAWAI‘I: Middle and elementary school haumāna paid tribute to Charles Reed Bishop in a ceremony at La‘amea Gym. High schoolers honored the KS founder as part of their chapel service. Above, Associated Students of KS student leaders present a portrait of Charles Reed Bishop and Bernice Pauahi Bishop to be adorned with lei.




Trustee Micah Kāne, Poʻo Kula Kāhealani Naeʻole-Wong, KSH Elementary School kumu Hālani Boshard and husband KSH Kahu Kaunaloa Boshard share their aloha for Bishop and Ke Ali‘i Pauahi.

KS MAUI: Forth graders Sarah Rose Cluney and Cash Kalama with Christian Education Instructor Monica Mata, after the haumāna led attendees in the mele “Kamanaʻo Iʻo” at the elementary school Charles Reed Bishop Service.




KSM seventh grader Keakealani Cashman, sang “Amazing Grace” at the middle school Charles Reed Bishop service. Trustee Lance Keawe Wilhelm (l) reflected on Bishop’s accomplishments and advised students to “Put your heart into everything you do and you can do extraordinary things as an ordinary person.” Kahu Kalani Wong (r) oversaw the service.




KS Maui alumnus and current KSM registrar Eleu Novikoff shared her experience as a KSM student while the campus was being built and the unique situation of always being the “senior” class because there were no upper classmen.




KS KAPALĀMA: KS Middle School haumāna honored Charles Reed Bishop with song, prayer, and hula, at Keawe Gym. The students welcomed guest from other schools supported by Bishop, with makana.




KS Kapālama Middle School haumāna join hands to sing “Hawaiʻi Aloha.”




KS Kapālama Elementary students filled Keʻeaumoku Gym with song in honor of Charles Reed Bishop.




KSK Elementary School ʻAha ʻOpio members performed short vignettes from the life of Charles Reed Bishop.
