The KS Maui After-School Program is open from August through May and is available to all KS Maui elementary students who are enrolled in grades kindergarten through grade five. The program operates on all regular school days from 2:30 to 5 p.m., and is held on campus in the Nāmāhana Dining Hall. The program is closed on all school holidays and on days students are dismissed at mid-day.
The program offers homework, study time and planned activities that include indoor and outdoor recreation. There are no off-campus field trips. Juice and water are provided, but KS does not provide meal or snack services. Healthy after-school snacks should be provided from home.
The KS Maui After-School Program is licensed by the State of Hawai‘i Department of Human Services and can provide after-school services to no more than 120 students. The student-to-staff ratio will not exceed 20:1 (20 students to one adult).
Registration
If you would like to register your child(ren) in the after-school program, please call the Kula Ha‘aha‘a office at 572-3300 to obtain a registration form. Return the completed registration form to the office and please be aware that a separate registration form is required for each registered student.
Fee
The monthly charge for each student enrolled in the after-school program is $30 per month. The monthly charge is a flat fee and is charged no matter how many days your student attends the program during the month. For your convenience, fee charges are billed through F.A.C.T.S. In the event the monthly fee is paid and the student is absent from the program for the entire month, KS will refund the monthly fee.
Student safety and security during the After-School Program
Afternoon pick-up
Upon arrival on campus, please report to the Nāmāhana Dining Hall to pick up your child. Please be prompt. Staff is unavailable to supervise students once the program ends at 5 p.m. Failure to pick up your child by 5 p.m. may result in your child’s dismissal from the program.
Illness or injury
Students who become ill or injured during the program will be evaluated by the KS registered nurse and/or medical assistant who is on duty until 3:30 p.m. After this time, the educational assistant (EA), who is first aid/CPR certified, will assess the situation. In the event of a serious medical emergency, 911 will be called and medical service personnel will transport the student to the nearest emergency medical facility.
Student accident insurance
Kamehameha Schools provides limited accident insurance for students with accidental injuries incurred during participation in school functions, activities or trips. This insurance provides accident coverage in conjunction with parents’ personal medical insurance or serves as primary insurance for those who are uninsured.
Students with disabilities
The Americans with Disabilities Act prohibits discrimination against individuals with physical or psychological disabilities. It is the policy of KS to make its programs, services and activities accessible to a qualified person with a disability, unless there is a fundamental alteration in the nature of the program or service, undue hardship, or the student poses a direct threat to him or herself, or to others. A “qualified person with a disability” refers to an individual with a disability who is otherwise qualified to participate in any given school, program or activity.
Island-wide emergency
KS’ emergency operations plan is activated the time a civil defense warning is issued. In such a case, parents can obtain information about school or their children in the following ways:
If students must be evacuated, school personnel will ensure that students are moved to a safe location. School personnel will notify parents to pick up students at the school campus to take them to an alternative location if necessary.
In case of local or national emergencies, students who ride the bus will be transported to the Kahului Shopping Center bus stop site AT THE NORMAL DROP-OFF TIME only if transportation is deemed safe. Otherwise, students will remain at the campus and parents will be notified of procedures for picking up students at the schools.
Lost and found
In the event a personal belonging is lost while your child is at school, there is a lost and found area at the Nāmāhana Dining Hall. In order to identify lost items, your child’s name should be clearly marked on all personal belongings brought to school, such as: jackets, sweaters, shoes, swimwear and towels. The school will not be responsible for loss or theft of any items.
