Born and raised in Southern California, Christopher (“Coach Chris”) Calvert has always been a leader. Chris attended college at Northern Arizona University where here earned his Bachelor of Science in Hotel and Restaurant Management. Following his years in Arizona he pursued careers in Hospitality, Sales and Custom Home Building. After many years of residing in the Rockies including Colorado and Montana, he returned to California where he worked as Food and Beverage Manager at Mammoth Mountain Ski Area. Prior to moving to Maui he was General Manager of Los Angeles Airport Marriott’s Champions Sports Bar.
Upon arrival to the Islands in the Fall of 2010 he joined TS Restaurants working at both Leilani’s on the Beach and Duke’s. In 2013 he began his service with the Department of Education where he has taught grades K-12 including all Core subjects as well as Special Education and Physical Education. While he has taught multiple subjects and grade levels, his teaching philosophy is based on the core value of “Respect.” Chris embraces the Christian values and Hawaiian Culture at Kamehameha Schools and reminds himself that we are all lifelong learners.
His aquatics background is highlighted by earning HHSAA Girls Varsity Water Polo state tournament berths as an Assistant Coach with Lahainaluna High School and Head Coach Baldwin High School. He has also represented the Maui Interscholastic League as an official for multiple HHSAA state tournaments. In 2014 he earned the Aaron Chaney Distinguished Referee Award with USA Water Polo. He has been selected to represent the Hawaii/ Pacific Northwest Region at the USA Water Polo Nation al Junior Olympics for the past ten consecutive years. Most recently, he represented the Hawaii Zone at the 2021 (14U) National Championships at Indiana University. As Chris enters his fifth season as the Head Coach for the Lady Warriors Varsity Water Polo team he reminds his student athletes of the values of commitment and hard work. While he enjoys teaching the fundamentals of water polo, his true focus remains on teaching teamwork and life lessons, “that’s what it’s all about.”
