Coach Afoa heads our football program with 20 years of College Division I experience at San Diego State University and the University of Hawaiʻi. In addition, he has 20+ years of coaching at the high school level that includes: Punahou, Steel Canyon (CA), KS Hawaiʻi, St. Louis, Pac-5, Campbell, and KS Maui. Coach Afoa was born in Tutila, American Samoa and later played football and graduated from St. Louis. He has three children and four grandchildren. His basic philosophy is to “Buy into and follow the process and build people with strong minds and character!”
Coach Dave Carino brings a diverse background of coaching at different programs around Hawaiʻi (three years at St. Louis Intermediate – LB and defensive coordinator, two years at semi-pro Hawaiian Warriors Oʻahu – defensive coordinator, 10 years at Baldwin – defensive and offensive coordinator, four years at Seabury Hall – defensive coordinator and head coach, and four years at KS Maui – DB). His philosophy is to ask student-athletes to give their best effort so as a coach, he is expected to model and coach that way. Coach Carino shared a few verses from the King James Bible that are integrated into his coaching: Ephesians 2:8-9 “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and not of yourselves: it is a gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.” Along the way in my journey through a lot of years of coaching, I’ve come to learn that all is vanity, winning and losing, but if done for the Lord Jesus Christ, it is to the glory of God and not in vain. “do all to the glory of God.”1 Corinthians 10:31
In his ninth year as an assistant at KS Maui, Coach Brian brings nearly 15 years of coaching experience from Baldwin HS. The Mt. Carmel (CA), San Diego Mesa CC, and Pacific University graduate also attended the University of Hawaiʻi at Manoa for his Hawaiʻi State teaching certificate. In addition to athletics being used as a vehicle that can teach life skills that cannot be taught in the classroom, Coach Brian said, “Students can learn teamwork, trust, respect, sportsmanship, overcoming adversity, and discipline ... all of these skills will help our student-athletes later on in life through college or career and carry them through adulthood.” He added that it is important for him to honor the coaches that invested their time and effort in him during his playing career, and serves as a way to pay that investment forward. His biggest payoff is when he runs into former student-athletes who are contributing successful members of the community, with a family of their own, and hopefully giving back their manaʻo to up and coming youth.
Coach Boro is entering his 7th year of coaching. He started his coaching career in 2014 at Toledo High School (Toledo, OR). He coached Menʻs Varsity Football, Basketball, & Baseball for four years. The Toledo Boomers earned their way to multiple playoff berths in all three sports, but the most impressive achievement belonged to the Menʻs Varsity Basketball team; the Boomers were 4-time defending Sunset Conference Champions & earned their way to the 2015 OSAA 2A State Championship game. Coach Boro moved to Richmond, CA in 2018 & went on to become the Menʻs Varisty Basketball Head Coach at Aspire Richmond California College Preparatory Academy in 2019.
Coach Boro always dreamed of returning to his alma mater (KS Maui, 2009) someday to be the next High School Choral Director & hopefully be involved with the athletic department in a coaching capacity. In 2020, that dream was realized in the classroom & in 2021, he began his coaching career with the KS Maui football & basketball programs.
Coach Boroʻs teaching & coaching philosophy are one & the same: “No one cares how much you know until they know how much you care.” – Theodore Roosevelt
