Wendy Larrow earns 2020 Hawai'i Art Educator Award

The National Art Education Association (NAEA) has selected Kamehameha Schools Kapālama Elementary School Visual Arts Kumu Wendy Larrow as the 2020 Hawai‘i Art Educator Award winner.

This prestigious honor, which was awarded through a peer review of nominations, recognizes an outstanding member from each state or province association whose service and contribution to art education merits acclaim. Larrow will receive her award at the NAEA National Convention in Minneapolis slated for March 26-28.

NAEA President Thom Knab said: “This award is being given to recognize excellence in professional accomplishment and service by a dedicated art educator. Wendy Larrow exemplifies the highly qualified art educators active in education today: leaders, teachers, students, scholars, and advocates who give their best to their students and the profession.”

Larrow has served the art community in a variety of capacities over the past 25 years. “Literacy Through the Arts” is her passion, and she believes it is important for students to express their voices and that the visual arts provide many opportunities for students to show their emotions, feelings, and ideas.

“Students engaged in the creative process, using their imagination and developing keen observation skills, sets the foundation for innovation and the ability to create compositions that share their story,” said Larrow, whose background is in both visual and performing arts.

Prior to teaching at KS, Larrow taught with the Hawai‘i Department of Education for 17 years and was named Hawai‘i State Teacher’s Association Central District Teacher of the Year. She also received the OC16 Outstanding Educator Award.
