Upcoming Aloha ‘Āina Concert celebrates Makahiki, Lā Kūʻokoʻa

Nov. 13, 2024

In this season of relaxation and celebration, Kamehameha Schools and the Kaʻiwakīloumoku Pacific Indigenous Institute are proud to bring you a FREE concert event to celebrate Lā Kūʻokoʻa and Makahiki.

The Aloha ‘Āina Concert on Nov. 22 will feature mele aloha ‘āina from two heavyweights in Hawaiian music. Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award-winner Dr. Jon Osorio will kick things off. Kaʻikena Scanlan and These Guys will no doubt have the crowd movin’ and groovin’.

“Mele — from the time of our kūpuna to now, has been one of the ways to transmit stories, information and history, and to uplift the people. This concert is aiming to inspire a deeper sense of aloha ʻāina, a deeper sense of love for our homeland and a call for ea,” said Lāiana Kanoa-Wong, a Kamehameha Schools cultural consultant.

The concert will take place at the Kaʻiwakīloumoku Pacific Indigenous Institute on the Kamehameha Schools Kapālama campus. Organizers put a good measure of intention when selecting that locale.

“We felt that having it at Kaʻiwakīloumku would be a pathway to a special evening as it is a place to gather and celebrate important things, not only for our people in Hawaiʻi but people throughout the Pacific,” said Kanoa-Wong.

Worried about parking? ʻAʻole pilikia. There’s parking at Bishop Hall, Pauahi Administration Building and Hale Hoʻokū Kaʻa (the main parking structure), with shuttles to take you back and forth to the venue.

So gather your ʻohana and hoaloha and hele mai to this fun and free concert that will fill your cup with Hawaiian pride!
