Connor Gonzalez and Lucas Kay-Wong receive their commended student certificates.

Two KSH seniors acknowledged as National Merit Commended Students

Oct. 27, 2023

Hoʻomaikaʻi to seniors Connor Gonzalez and Lucas Kay-Wong on officially being named National Merit Commended Students for their performance on the 2022 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®).

This morning, joined by their ʻohana, they received recognition certificates and lei celebrating this significant achievement, which places them in the top .1% of students nationally.

Out of 4 million students that took the 2022 PSAT/NMSQT exam, only about 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Those being named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success. They are now among the seven KS Hawaiʻi students that have garnered this achievement since the first graduation class of 2006 of our campus.

Both students are soccer standouts and an important part of the two-time defending state championship team. Lucas was also selected and was a star for the youth Hawaiian National Team, Hui Kanaka Pōwāwae, that competed in Aotearoa this past summer. He hopes to be able to contine to play soccer at the collegiate level and has identified Stanford and Princeton as his top choices to continue his education. Connor serves as a class officer, was instrumental in starting the DnD club here at KS Hawaiʻi and hopes to study computer science at M.I.T.

Please join us in congratulating Connor and Lucas on this acknowledgement and their hard work to achieve it.

I Mua Kamehameha!
