Students are encouraged to report any issues that make them feel unsafe

Oct. 3, 2024

At Kamehameha Hawaiʻi, we are committed to creating a safe and supportive environment for all haumāna. As part of building a strong culture of accountability and transparency, we want to ensure that students know the reporting tools available to them for reporting any behaviors or activities that may compromise their health, safety, and well-being.

Everyone needs to know they are in a safe environment and feel this is a place where they belong. Our faculty and staff of Kamehameha Hawaiʻi recognize this as a sacred kuleana and our highest priority as a kula. A true culture of safety is something we build together - haumāna, ‘ohana, and hoa kumu alike - through a shared kuleana.

Students and their ʻohana play an important role in keeping our school safe and contributing to the well-being of our kauhale. By consistently practicing and reinforcing pono actions and behaviors, and by holding their peers and the individuals around them accountable, students can make a significant difference in how quickly issues and incidents are addressed and resolved.

In quarter one, we conducted training sessions to ensure students feel confident to speak up when situations occur. We will continue to remind them about the importance of pono behavior at all times.

There are several ways for students to report incidents, whether immediate or after the fact:

Tell an adult immediately - We hope that students feel comfortable reporting issues immediately to trusted adults around them for follow-up and investigation. If there is a medical emergency or immediate threat, an adult will call 9-1-1 and/or notify security.

Hiʻikua Student Helpline - For non-emergency situations, students can use the Hi‘ikua Student Helpline to anonymously report any issues they are uncomfortable sharing with administrators or faculty. All reports are immediately reviewed and routed to the appropriate administrator for follow-up and investigation, though reports are often filed well after an incident has occurred.

Report It! - In response to feedback received from faculty and staff, in Spring 2023, our kula introduced a campus-specific, quick-response reporting tool called Report It!. This tool allows students to report incidents happening in real time during the school day, such as prohibited items on-campus, vandalism, or vaping. Unlike Hiʻikua, Report It Now! alerts division administrators immediately, allowing them to respond promptly.

The process for students to immediately report an unfolding safety issue is simple:

  • Step 1: Scan QR code or click a link for the Report It! form.
  • Step 2: Complete three questions (incident type, location), with an option to include contact info only if submitter desires follow up.
  • Step 3: The school administrator/campus safety team will immediately receive the report and will coordinate a response.

The link to the Report It! form is available on our website. Signage with the QR code for both Report It Now! and Hiʻikua has been posted around the school, along with brief descriptions of how and when to use each.

As the world continues to change, we remain dedicated to creating a culture of safety at Kamehameha Hawaiʻi. Mahalo for your partnership in promoting the pono use of these resources for a safe kauhale. If you have any questions, please talk with a member of the administration team or email us at kshawaii@ksbe.edu.
