Kula Waena returns to the all-kula tradition of Lei Pāpahi to mark a milestone moment in each haumāna's journey.

Stream the Kula Waena Lei Pāpahi Transition Ceremony

May. 24, 2022

Watch our kula waena Lei Pāpahi transition ceremony as the eighth grade class of 2026, transitions from middle to high school haumāna, officially joining our kula kiʻekiʻe by marking this special milestone in their time at kula waena. And the classes of 2027 and 2028 officially transition to being 7th and 8th graders.

LEI PĀPAHI:  n. Leis of alternating groups of flowers and leaves, entwined leis of same or different flowers; adornment of several leis, usually both on head and around neck.

PĀPAHI:  nvt. To decorate, honor, confer honors; adornment, decoration

The idea is to honor our students, especially our 8th graders - to say that they have been "decorated" with all of the knowledge that their kumu have bestowed upon them.  We are sending them off to high school adorned with the leis of education that we have given them.

The idea for our younger students is that they are still collecting their lei.
