Spotlight Now highlights benefits of Hawaiian culture-based education

July 23, 2024

A recent episode of Spotlight Now on Hawaii News Now explored the importance and impact of Hawaiian culture-based education. Kamehameha Schools Hawaiʻi Poʻo Kumu Dr. Kaʻulu Gapero KSK’93 was a featured guest along with Dr. Eōmailani Kukahiko KSK’95 from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa.

At the beginning of the discussion with hosts Ryan Kalei Tsuji and Yunji de Nies, Gapero pointed out that Kamehameha Schools has built on the work of many people in the movement to help establish the Hawaiian language as a priority.

“Understanding that we have three K-12 campuses across three islands and 30 preschool sites, it was very important for us to develop a shared understanding of what Hawaiian culture-based education is,” explained Gapero.

“For the context of Kamehameha, and again, it’s just a definition, it’s not the global definition – just want to be clear about that – it’s really grounding education in Hawaiian culture, ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi and a Hawaiian worldview. It’s learning that’s personalized for individual learners. It’s learning that is responsive to the needs of ‘āina and lāhui. And it’s also education that is rigorous and relevant to modern environmental contexts and technologies.”
