The Huliko‘a Kaiāulu Scholar Speaker Series event will return in January with a special presentation from Dr. Reni Soon, MD, MPH and Dr. Jennifer Elia, DrPH.

The event takes place on Tuesday, January 19 at the Community Learning Center at Mā‘ili (CLC-M), and is free and open to the public.

Soon and Elia will present “Understanding pregnancy intention and contraceptive decision-making among Native Hawaiians.”

This project explored how Hawaiians feel about and think about pregnancy and pregnancy planning.

Completed in partnership with Wai‘anae Coast Comprehensive Health Center, the project included: 10 interviews with key informants from the Hawaiian community; eight focus groups with Hawaiian men and women of diverse ages; and 40 interviews with Hawaiian women of childbearing age.

Soon earned her advanced degrees from Stanford University and John A. Burns School of Medicine and is currently on the faculty of the University of Hawai‘i Department of OB/GYN. Since 2005, she has provided women’s health services at the Wai‘anae Coast Comprehensive Health Center.

Elia earned degrees from Yale University and the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. Since 2012, she has served as a junior researcher at the University of Hawai‘i Department of OB/GYN.

Both Soon and Elia are graduates of Kamehameha Schools Kapālama.

Findings from the Children’s Healthy Living (CHL) program will also be presented. CHL worked with community partners to collect measurments and improve the health of young children in the Nānākuli community from 2013 to 2015. Attendees will get to hear more about what was learning from this important project.

The event starts at 5:30 p.m. A free, simple dinner will be served and childcare will be provided. An RSVP is appreciated. Call 670-2045 or email kapua@ksbe.edu to confirm your attendance. CLC-M is located at 87-790 Kulauku St. in Mā‘ili.

Huliko‘a Kaiāulu was created as an opportunity for the community to celebrate the pursuit of higher education and listen to scholars from the Wai‘anae Coast share their mana‘o, while learning more about topics that impact their lives as residents of the region.

The series is sponsored by Kamehameha Schools, INPEACE, the UH Hawai‘inuiākea School of Hawaiian Knowledge and MA‘O Organic Farms. Future presentations are scheduled for Feb. 16, March 15 and April 19.

This is the series’ third year. Many of the presentations from the previous two years are available for viewing on the Kamehameha Schools YouTube channel.
