KS staffers are among first to earn EdD at UH

Seven KS staffers were among the first cohort to graduate from the University of Hawaiʻi’s new Doctorate of Education Professional Education Practice program. The three-year program is aimed at preparing professionals for leadership roles in education.

The UH Mānoa College of Education grants several kinds Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees in education, but this is the first time it has granted Doctor of Education degrees.

“I am humbled by the chance I have been given to do practitioner’s research that focused on the middle school building process and related aspects school culture,” said KS Kapālama Middle School Principal Dr. Pua Ka‘ai, a member of the 28-member EdD cohort.

“We are given a special opportunity here at Kamehameha to continue to learn and to reflect upon our learning. It is a privilege to be part of the Doctorate of Education in Professional Education Practice program and I am thankful for the chance to do research in the actual setting that I work in to enhance our instructional delivery and practice.”

Pua Ka‘ai, KS Kapālama Middle School principal
Dissertation title:  “The Efficacy of Shared Design of Building, Curriculum, and Program on Teacher Collaboration”

Laurie Seto, Office for Educator Growth and Development design specialist
Dissertation title:  “A‘o Aku A‘o Mai: A Study of Educators’ Professional Learning”

The seven staffers received partial tuition reimbursements from Kamehameha Schools to earn their EdD degrees. Regular employees are eligible to apply for the reimbursement of college tuition and lab fees for courses related to their current positions.
