The final Huliko‘a Kaiāulu scholar speaker series presentation of the 2014-15 school year is scheduled for Tuesday, April 28.

The series—sponsored by KS in partnership with the UH Hawai‘inuiākea School of Hawaiian Knowledge and MA‘O Organic Farms—is an opportunity for the community to celebrate the pursuit of higher education and listen to scholars from the Wai‘anae Coast share their mana‘o, while learning more about topics that impact their lives as residents on the Coast.

This month’s featured scholar is Kawika Mersberg.

Mersberg, who hails from Mākaha, will present “Hula is the language of the heart, therefore the heartbeat of the Hawaiian people” which will look at how hula can be used as a vehicle to transport ‘ike Hawai‘i in the 21st century.

A Hawaiian culture-based education practitioner for over two decades, Mersberg currently serves as kumu hula and vice principal at Hālau Kū Mana Public Charter School. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Hawaiian Studies and a master’s degree in Special Education.  In 2005, Kawika received his ‘uniki rites as kumu hula under the tutelage of Kumu Kapi‘olani Ha‘o of Hālau Ke Kia‘a A O Hula. Through this foundation Mersberg continues to utilize Hawaiian values and Hawaiian epistemology to educate nā pua o Hawaiʻi nei.

The event takes place from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room at the Early Learning Kauhale at the Community Learning Center at Mā‘ili (87-790 Kulauku St). A free, simple dinner will be provided and representatives from higher education will be present.
