The Huliko‘a Kaiāulu Scholar Speaker Series will return to the Community Learning Center at Mā‘ili (CLC-M) on Tuesday, Sept. 15.
The series is an opportunity for the community to celebrate the pursuit of higher education and listen to scholars from the Wai‘anae Coast share their mana‘o, while learning more about topics that impact their lives as residents of the region.
Attendees can expect to hear some inspiring stories and community research, learn how to access higher education resources and enjoy a lite dinner. Keiki care will be provided so parents can participate in the evening’s conversation.
For the first presentation of this year, scholar Rouel Velasco will present “Seeking Your Excellence” which will talk about the practice of reflection and envisioning your ideal self.
Velasco, who hails from Mā‘ili, is an experienced, highly motivated and energetic practitioner and educator at the University of Hawai‘i – West O‘ahu. He has over 10 years of professional, training and facilitation experiences in student activities and leadership education.
Velasco earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in history with a minor in sociology, and a Master of Education degree in higher education administration from the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. He is actively involved in community organizations and experiences committed to the advancement, empowerment and access of students from underrepresented and disadvantaged communities in higher education.
An exciting, new component of this year’s series is that each month will start with a presentation from a current college student. This month’s student reflection will be given by Cameoljade “CJ” Woods.
Woods is currently serving as a Mohala program extern with Kamehameha Schools. She is pursuing her bachelor’s degree in sociology/social work. She will share her experiences as a current college student and participant in the MA‘O Youth Leadership Training program and Ho‘owaiwai YLT internship.
