The Kamehameha Schools-sponsored scholar speaker series Hulikoʻa Kaiāulu continues on Tuesday, May 17 at the Community Learning Center at Mā‘ili (CLC-M), highlighting the protection and preservation of the Wai‘anae moku (district) mountain range.

Conservationist David Hoppe-Cruz is set to deliver the event’s keynote presentation titled, “The Last Gardenia: Protecting and Preserving the Wai‘anae Moku Mountain Range.”

Hoppe-Cruz, a graduate of Wai‘anae High School and the University of Hawai‘i – West O‘ahu, will discuss the importance of the district’s unique flora and fauna and how it relates to the sustainability of the ecosystem.

He will also share information regarding the recent fire that destroyed the Nānākuli valley and how the event compels one to learn more about ways to support protection and preservation efforts.

Also on the agenda is a student reflection by Nānākuli High School graduate, Charnel Colin. She will share her experiences as a current agroecology student at UH – West O‘ahu and MA‘O Organic Farms co-manager.

Hulikoʻa Kaiāulu – Explorations of the Kaiāulu breeze – was created as an opportunity for the Wai‘anae Coast ‘ohana to celebrate the pursuit of higher education and listen to scholars share their mana‘o, while learning more about topics that impact their lives as residents of the region.

The speaker series is sponsored by KS, INPEACE, MA‘O Organic Farms, and the UH Hawai‘inuiākea School of Hawaiian Knowledge. Since February 2014, the event has featured more than 30 speakers, many of whom are members of the Wai‘anae Coast community, and has welcomed more than 800 people to the community centers.

The event starts at 5:30 p.m. A free, simple dinner will be served and childcare will be provided. An RSVP is appreciated. Call 670-2045 or email kapua@ksbe.edu to confirm your attendance. CLC-M is located at 87-790 Kulauku St. in Mā‘ili.
