Return to on-campus athletics

Feb. 23, 2021

Athletic training and participation in some sports returned to our campus officially on January 19, giving student athletes a much needed outlet to an important activity that connects them with their school and each other. Athletics and participation in some form of organized sport is an important component to well-being for our students. Over 80% of students at Kamehameha Hawaiʻi play one or more team sport, so athletics is a big part of their identity as individuals.

Kamehameha Schools Hawaiʻi kula kiʻekiʻe continuously and constantly reviews, monitors, implements, and assesses all safety protocols and procedures of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), National Federation of State High School Association (NFHS) and the Hawaiʻi Department of Health to ensure the safety of our haumāna and members of our school.

As soon as conditions were such that a safe return to sports were possible and protocols could be, athletic directors, trainers, and high school administrators met to see what might be possible to provide this important connection for our haumāna.

The next phase includes scrimmage games with other schools and club teams with important protocols in place. Swimming and Diving participated in a scrimmage at Hawaiʻi Prepatory Academy (HPA) this past Saturday. The first on-campus scrimmage games take place tonight (February 23) as our Warriors welcome the HPA Ka Makani's boys basketball team for both JV and Varsity scrimmage games this evening with JV at 5 p.m. and Varsity to follow.

Additional scrimmages scheduled this week include:

  • 2/25 - Girls Basketball vs. Christian Liberty Academy at 6 p.m.
  • 2/26 - Girls Soccer vs. HPA at 2 p.m.
  • 2/26 - Boys Soccer vs. HPA at 4 p.m.
  • 2/27 - Cross Country vs. HPA at 9 a.m.
  • 2/27 - Swimming vs. HPA at 11 a.m.
  • 2/27 - Girls Basketball vs. HPA at 5 p.m.

An important safety protocol includes limiting the number of people in the athletics facility. As such, there will be no spectators allowed at games. To give our ʻohana an opportunity to still see our student athletes compete, whenever possible, games hosted here on campus will be live streamed on the KSH Athletics YouTube channel and links will be provided by coaches when that is available.

Wishing all athletes a safe return and healthy play this year!

Earlier this year, our athletic training staff put together a safety guidelines video for student athletes returning for training:
