Mrs. Barsamianʻs 8th grade Mixed Media class, Art in Action participated in the Empty Bowls project this quarter to raise money for the Maui Food Bank with their artwork. The class learned about different techniques to construct ceramic bowls. They learned to throw on the wheel, and create handbuilt bowls using a slab and mold construction. Students then presented their bowls for sale at the Passion Project Expo night hosted by Ms.Prais and Ms. Shiraishiʻs English classes. Attendees had the option of selecting an “Empty Bowl” from the display, then filling it with freshly popped popcorn and toppings. The purpose of Empty Bowls is to raise awareness and funds to support our local food shelves and help alleviate hunger on Maui. Through the generous donations of our community, the students raised over $500 and delivered their donation in person to Marlene Rice at the Maui Food Bank.
