Haumana learned the difference between fact and opinion from a strange but familiar looking visitor. Next they were given the task of creating an Australian animal fact card. The card was to include facts on where the animal lived in Australia, what it looked like, what it ate and a another fact of their choice. The haumana also had to write their opinion of the animal and provide support from their research for that statement.
Through this activity, haumana learned the basics for forming an opinion which will help them in writing future opinion pieces (CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.2.1; CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.2.2). By designing a fact card they also learned another way in which they could share their learning. Students used Explain Everything to design the fact card but can use other apps as well to share what they are learning in other topics of interest. This will give students voice and choice in their learning.
