It's so critical to be prepared in the event of an emergency event. Taking steps now will help you in the event that you need to act.

Preparing for Hurricane season

July 14, 2025

We know how important it is to be prepared in the event of an emergency. Safety is our priority at Kamehameha Schools, so a number of emergency operation plans have been developed to guide our response should we need them. With hurricane season upon us, we also want to share how Ke Kula ʻo Kamehameha monitors and will plan to inform you should a hurricane be forecasted to impact Hawaiʻi.

Our comprehensive Crisis Management Team(CMT) actively monitors weather conditions in close coordination with the National Weather Service(NWS) and local emergency management partners. As storms develop, we will share timely updates with our staff and families that may include monitoring, campus or program closures, and preparation tips and resources.

If a storm is forecast to have an impact on our pae ʻāina, messages will be shared from the Kamehameha Schools CMT with our entire KS ‘ohana:

  • KS will send a confirmation of awareness and monitoring of a storm around a week out from the forecasted impact.
  • When a watch is issued, KS will confirm and provide any relevant updates on decisions being considered for any affected sites.
  • When a warning is issued, KS will send confirmation of any closures or plans to continue operations for KS sites statewide.
  • Should a closure need to occur, KS will confirm plans to reopen as soon as that determination is made.

Throughout that time, our kula will also share additional information as needed of any steps being taken specific to our kauhale.

KS is committed to sharing accurate and relevant information through our established communication channels as conditions evolve. We also encourage families to take steps now to prepare at home. The NWS has released a number of tips ʻohana should consider in making their own preparations at home including:

  • Developing an evacuation plan for your home
  • Assembling disaster supplies including food, water, batteries, chargers, a radio, and cash
  • Getting an insurance checkup and documenting your possessions
  • Having a hand-written list of contacts and communications plan
  • Strengthening your home against any hurricane-related impacts (high winds, flooding, etc.)

Please also consider the following resources to stay informed and ready:

Mahalo for partnering with us to stay prepared, stay informed, and stay safe.

Mālama pono!

As part of our emergency plan, KS has a cadence of messages to help inform families of what to expect and actions we are taking in the interest of safety for our kauhale.
