Students sign wave along Bayfront ahead of the general election.

Our Kaiāulu Votes advocacy efforts offer opportunities for students to get civically engaged

Nov. 6, 2024

Throughout this school year, high school students have been involved with a youth civic engagement project called Our Kaiāulu Votes. It's an inclusive, Native Hawaiian-led movement of ‘ōiwi, kama‘āina, and first-time voters standing together to change our destiny through voting.

On August 9 and October 22, students from Kamehameha Schools Hawaiʻi were joined by peers from Ka ʻUmeke Kāʻeo and St. Josephs to lift their voices to encourage our community to exercise their right to vote, and fulfill that kuleana to our community. After sign-waving along Bayfront highway, KSH students did a Walk to the Box, visiting the County of Hawaiʻi building and learning more about why voting is so important. As voter turnout numbers continue to remain low, knowing that far less than half the eligible population is speaking for everyone is a wake up call, and a trend we hope we can turn. Starting by engaging more young people, and having them see the power they can hold by participating in this kuleana has never been more important.

No matter the outcome, we must continue to remain civically engaged and move forward to create the future we want to see for ourselves and the generations that follow. I Mua!
