Aug. 7, 2020

Contributed by Shaundor Chillingworth

Aloha kākou e nā haumāna ---

As we prepare for the reopening of our campus and our high school division know that much has taken place to ensure your safety as well as your academic continuity.  This is an update to prepare you for next week as you come upon campus.  For the students on the Keleaʻo Online program – you will be updated separately with your remote learning online.

For those ‘ohana and students that were not able to join us for the ‘Ohana Presence sessions that was held on July 27-30 – please find below a link to the PowerPoint and videos of those live sessions.  This coincides with my email on July 24, 2020.

IN THE MORNING AND ARRIVAL ON CAMPUS

  • If you get up and you know you are not well based on the following indicators – fever, cough, lost of taste/smell, shortness of breath – you should remain home.  Your absence still should be called in to the office accordingly.
  • Students are NOT allowed on campus before 6:45 AM.
  • Students arriving on BUS will have their temperatures scanned at your respective pick-up area.
  • Students that are dropped off by ‘ohana members will be dropped off at PAIʻEA STADIUM PARKING LOT – you will see a long white tent tunnel from the parking lot to Lunalilo Hale – that’s where you will be dropped off.
    • Students being dropped off may have their temperature check at Lunalilo Hale.
    • Siblings that are part of our MS and ES that will be dropped off at Paiʻea Stadium parking lot will have their temperature checked at Lunalilo Hale before moving to their respective division.
    • As you move up to HS administration bldg – you could be scanned twice.  There should be NO problem there.
  • Student drivers will park their vehicles in the student parking lot and proceed to the front of HS administration building to have your temperature scanned.
  • At 8:00 AM – the scanners will be closed.  If you are arriving to school after 8:00 AM – your tardiness MUST be called in.
    • You will be dropped off at the front of the HS Administration Building.  A member of the HS administration office will take your temperature to be cleared.
    • As much as possible – get to school on time!
  • If you are not cleared through the scanner, you will be asked to move to a staging area where your temperature will be checked again with a handheld temperature thermometer.  You will be scanned from the front and the side of your head if need be.  If there is a fever, your ‘ohana will be called to turn around and pick you up.  For student drivers, your ‘ohana will be called FIRST before release.

PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR SAFETY AND THOSE AROUND YOU!

  • Face masks should be on at ALL TIMES.
    • Bring your extra face masks just in case.  If you do not have your face masks – report to HS admin office for a disposable face mask.
    • Extra face masks may be needed depending on your activities in your classroom.
  • Eyewear will be provided to you on your first day on campus in your respective areas (i.e. coming off bus, student driver area, drop off areat at Paiʻea parking)
  • 6” Social Distancing should occur at ALL TIMES, EVERY TIME!!!
  • Consistent and constant washing of hands should be occuring.
  • Students that are NOT adhering to these rules during any part of the day may be sent to administration for follow-up, placement in a Hoʻokanaka Educational Center, or possible early release from school.

BREAKFAST

  • After you are cleared in the morning with your temperature when you arrive to school, you will move to Keawe to pick-up your breakfast.  Once you pick-up your breakfast, you will report to one of the following areas to eat your breakfast:
    • Freshmen – in front of Koaiʻa Gym
    • Sophomores – in Keawe Dining Hall
    • Juniors/Seniors – in front of Kekuʻiapoiwa/tent areas.

START OF THE SCHOOL DAY

  • At 7:40 AM – the first bell will ring.  Students should move to their first period class.
  • Use the sensored sanitizing station outside each of the learning spaces before you enter the classroom.
  • Once you enter, you will be equipped to wipe down your area space within the classroom.
  • At 7:45 AM – the oli will play over the loudspeaker.  Students should stand.
    • After oli, if there is a member of the deputation that can offer prayer for the class – please do so or a statement of affirmation by your kumu or anyone in the class can be done.

    • If you have not been approved to change ALPHA by today (Friday, August 7, 2020), you must remain in your alpha group.
    • I have closed any and all requests to change alpha based on numbers of seats in classrooms.
  • Students and ‘ohana should adhere to the calendar (see attached).
  • Students are NOT required to be on campus on NON-COHORT days or Fridays.

  • For students on their COHORT DAY – if you do not have a FACE-TO-FACE class and have a Kaunaloa class, you must report to your respective Hoʻokanaka Educational Center to do your Kaunaloa Class or study help. You are not allowed to be outside of your center or in another grade level’s center….stay in your center.
    • Students will sign in and out from the center each time they enter and leave between periods.
  • Centers are open for students that want to work at school on their NON-COHORT DAY.
    • These students will come to school and have their temperature check, have breakfast, and report directly to their HOʻOKANAKA EDUCATIONAL CENTER.
      • Students will sign in and out from the center.  This will give me a number of students to ensure preparation of enough meals.
      • These students should be here at the start of the school day and will depart at the end of the school day.  Students should NOT be dropped off sporadically throughout the day.
      • Expectation is that students work independently on their assignments with the necessary support within the Hoʻokanaka Educational Center.
      • Lunch will be provided to these students as well.
  • Students in the HOʻOKANAKA EDUCATIONAL CENTER should have their own headphones or earphones to be used to minimize distraction in the center and optimize their own learning.

EARLY RELEASE

  • If students are finished with their face-to-face classes for the day and request early release for student drivers or pick-up by ‘ohana, due to the rotating schedule – ‘ohana (parents/guardians) should email me and the front office for early release at this time.
    • For early pick-up – ‘ohana can pick up their child from the FRONT of the HS administration building.

END OF THE SCHOOL DAY

  • At the end of the school day, students who arrived on bus will report to the bus ramp for departure.
  • Student drivers will move to their vehicles in the student parking.
  • Students that were dropped off will move to Lunalilo Hale to be picked up.
  • As there is NO athletic bus – students should be off campus by 3:30 PM.  ‘Ohana must make arrangements for pick-up.
