Nine Kamehameha Schools educators recently earned certification by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS), bringing the number of certified teachers at KS to 73!

The 10-year teaching certification is the nation’s highest credential in the teaching profession and is aimed at advancing the quality of teaching and learning. To become a National Board Certified Teacher (NBCT), educators must demonstrate that their teaching meets the profession’s standards through a strict, peer-reviewed and performance-based process, similar to professional certification in fields such as medicine.

“Ha‘aheo nā kumu NBCTs. E lei mai ‘oukou i ka lei o ka lanakila. The accomplishments of our National Board Certified Teachers bring to light the dedication and perseverance of exemplary individuals who have worked hard to develop their teaching talents and skills,” said KS Executive Vice President of Education Dr. Holoua Stender. “They bring a sense of pride and respect to all of us who have chosen teaching as our life-long profession.”

NBPTS 2015 rankings show that Hawai‘i achieved an impressive 39.2 percent growth in total number of certified teachers in the last three years, the second highest percentage growth in the nation.

Hawai‘i also ranked 31st in the nation for total number of certified teachers at 554, and ranked 14th in the nation by percent of teachers who are NBCTs at 4.7 percent. In 2015, 50 teachers in Hawai‘i earned the certification, 37 of whom are newly certified and 13 of whom renewed their certification.

“The teachers who pursue the national certification exemplify the dedication and commitment of all educators to their profession and their students,” added KS Managing Director of Ho‘olaukoa Educational Systems and Strategies Phyllis Unebasami.

“After a full day of teaching and additional school responsibilities, they use their discretionary energies to prepare a professional portfolio and take assessments that qualify their skills as a professional educator. This is not an easy endeavor. It is an honor that they chose teaching Hawai‘iʻs keiki as they could have without a doubt had excelled in another career of their choice."

If you are a KS educator interested in seeking certification, contact Education Design Specialist Kim Enanoria at kienanor@ksbe.edu or 982-0709. Applications are currently being accepted for the 2016-2017 KS cohort.

In addition to supporting its own teachers through the certification process, KS extends its educational reach by providing candidate support to public school teachers seeking certification as well.
