The Plaza Assisted Living (The Plaza), one of Hawaiʻi’s largest senior assisted living care providers, recently held a traditional Hawaiian blessing and groundbreaking ceremony for its newest kūpuna community in Kāneʻohe. The Plaza is leasing the 70,000-square-foot site from Kamehameha Schools. Construction began on Feb. 1 and the project is slated to completed by the summer of 2019.

The Plaza at Kāneʻohe will be the sixth residence in the Plaza Assisted Living family of properties, which will feature 117 apartments that can accommodate up to 145 residents. The four-story building will be located at the corner of Haiku Road and Alaloa Street – directly across from Windward Mall which is also located on KS land. It will provide several specialized levels of care including independent living; assisted living; short-term respite stays and memory care.

“The Plaza Assisted Living group has a history of offering care for our kūpuna,” said Cathy Camp, KS development director. “They share our vision and have respect for local culture and ʻāina. We look forward to seeing this facility open and help families find care for their loved ones.”

The Plaza’s memory care program, HALI‘A Memory Care, is based on the internationally recognized Best Friends model of dementia care. The comprehensive approach is based on the understanding that personal relationships are of the utmost importance to effective dementia care. Those relationships require the same essential elements as with any friendship, which include respect, empathy, support, trust and humor.

“We’re looking forward to building a new home for our kūpuna on Oʻahu’s Windward side that’ll offer comprehensive care services, state-of-the-art amenities and is conveniently located for their loved ones to visit,” said Tricia Medeiros, chief operating officer, The Plaza Assisted Living. “Our goal is to foster our future residents’ independence in a safe and caring environment that feels like home.”

The Plaza at Kāneʻohe will offer a variety of services including health care support, housekeeping and exercise and wellness programs. There will also be scheduled transportation for residents to run errands and attend doctor appointments. Modern amenities will range from restaurant-style dining and a coffee bistro, to amovie theater, fitness/physical therapy area and hair salon.

Representatives from The Plaza, Sound Building Systems Hawai‘i, MW Group, Ltd. and Wattenbarger Architects will participate in the groundbreaking ceremony.
