A pilot program launched by Kamehameha Schools and the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa, Makalapua Na‘auao, is showing promise as Native Hawaiians are graduating on time at a record rate from the university. Nearly 150 Native Hawaiians, many of them first-generation college students, received scholarships at UH’s four-year campuses starting in 2016, and have also benefitted by receiving peer mentoring, tutoring and counseling.

A similar partnership with KS and Whitworth University is in place as two cohorts of Native Hawaiian students from the Wai‘anae Coast are attending college at the school in Spokane, Wash., and all are on pace to graduate thanks in part to an extensive support system. Through focused partnerships on educational systems change, KS continues to nurture an environment in which more Native Hawaiians can succeed and thrive.
