The staff comprises of five lines and four spaces. Each of those lines and spaces represents a different letter, which in turn symbolizes a note.  Kumu Lum Ho taught students a catchy phrase to help them understand note placement; “every good boy does fine” for the notes E, G,B,D and F which is placed on the lines as well as “face in the space” for the notes F, A, C and E which are placed alphabetically in the spaces up the staff. He then allowed the students to play a game which helped to visually reinforce this lesson.
