Motion, Magnetism and Matter!

This is what K-2 Science has been up to this week:

Oct. 25, 2017

The Kindergarteners have been learning about motion, energy, friction, push and pull. The Blue Group just started creating, what they think will be the fastest car… They added washers to their cars, weighed them, tested out their speed and re-designed their cars. Does weight make a difference? Shape of car? Well, they are soon going to find out when we race them! The Red group had their race this week. Our first-place winner was Naeana. Cam was our second-place winner and Eidan was our third-place winner. Red group learned that lighter cars travel faster!

In first grade, the students have been learning all about magnets. Today the Pueo group tried to see if they could stop the power of a magnet. How strong is the pull of a magnet? They used fabric, newspaper, aluminum foil and paper plates. One group found it took nine layers of newspaper to stop the force of a magnet. Two groups had to come together to use all of their fabric to stop the force of a magnet! They showed great collaboration and creative thinking skills.

Finally, in second grade, the students explored liquids. First, we signed up for our lab roles. Then, we conducted an experiment called Liquid Fireworks. What happens when you put oil in water? What happens when you add food coloring? The students thought nothing was going to happen and they were surprised to see what did!
