Like many across our island, we have been monitoring the Mauna Loa
earthquake and eruption activity over the last month. After last night’s
eruption, we know that there may be some unease and worry with the
situation.
We want to reassure our ʻohana that we remain on top of this situation, and while school remains open,
we are prepared with plans for evacuation and will make programmatic
adjustments should the situation necessitate it. This includes
monitoring for air quality at our kula, which is done regularly. We have
an SO2 monitoring station on-campus.
We will continue to monitor the latest updates from Hawaiʻi County Civil Defense.
The most recent update included an ashfall warning, which we are monitoring. See the update below:

and National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a ashfall warning due to
the Mauna Loa eruption. NWS is tracking a rain front that will bring
winds to the south that may affect the ash and sulfur dioxide that is
being emitted. Winds may keep the ash and sulfur over the islands. HVO
has issued a red ash alert to all airlines as well as a high sulfuric
warning. HVO says Hawaii island can see up to ½ inch of ash fall.
Persons with respiratory problems are advised to stay indoors and take
precautions.
