At Ke Kula ʻo Kamehameha, our kumu dedicate themselves to shaping the next generation of ʻōiwi leaders. For Kumu Appreciation Week, we’re highlighting some of their efforts to help our haumāna grow, ensuring a bright future for our lāhui.
What inspired you to become a kumu?
I was inspired by my family lineage (aunt and grandmother, uncle and cousins who were also teachers). As a teacher, I hope to make a positive impact on the lives of children globally, to uplift and inspire through education, creativity and action.
Tell us about a time you saw your haumāna use what they’ve learned to make a difference. What did that mean to you?
Over many years, I have been inspired by haumāna here in Hawaiʻi who have made positive impacts on environmental awareness, philanthropy and charity. They became leaders in Hawaiʻi and have made an impact on others by being active in their community, fostering awareness and leading by a positive example to make Hawaiʻi and better place for everyone.
What’s one lesson you hope your haumāna carry forward?
To always think and act from your core values, to speak out for social justice and to be the change you wish to see in the world!
What’s your advice for new kumu embracing this kuleana?
Self-care is crucial. Teaching is like a marathon, so make sure to take an hour a day to devote to caring for your own personal well-being (yoga, surfing, cooking, gardening, exercising, creative arts, music). This will allow you to shine your light to others while keeping yourself grounded, healthy and happy!
Shout out a fellow kumu who empowers their haumāna every day!
