Meet our kumu: Cherise Akao — Leading with heart and Hawaiian values

May 7, 2025

At Ke Kula ʻo Kamehameha, our kumu dedicate themselves to shaping the next generation of ʻōiwi leaders. For Kumu Appreciation Week, we’re highlighting some of their efforts to help our haumāna grow, ensuring a bright future for our lāhui.

Meet Cherise Akao, KS Kapālama

What inspired you to become a kumu?
I’ve always wanted to be a kumu. My sisters and I are the oldest in our ‘ohana and we were often asked to help watch our younger cousins. I wanted to be a babysitter but as I got older my mom convinced me that being a teacher was better. I knew that working with children was what I wanted to do.

Tell us about a time you saw your haumāna use what they’ve learned to make a difference. What did that mean to you?
One of our focuses this year is kalo. We had the opportunity to grow kalo, work in the loʻi, kuʻi kalo, read moʻolelo on kalo, and so much more! The haumāna have grown a deep pilina and kuleana with kalo. I smile when I hear the haumāna talking to their kalo, speaking kind words at the dining hall when poi is served, and caring for the ʻāina.

What’s one lesson you hope your haumāna carry forward?
I maikaʻi ke kalo i ka ‘oha. These haumāna represent their ‘ohana and Kamehameha Schools. I want them to be kind to others and to walk with a humble heart. I want to see them become leaders and set a good example for their younger siblings.

What’s your advice for new kumu embracing this kuleana?
Soak in all that you can! I have only been teaching for 3 years and have learned so much about who I am as a teacher and kanaka. I am constantly learning new things from ‘ōlelo Hawaiʻi to Bible verses, ‘ōlelo noʻeau and so much more that helps me to be a better kumu for my haumāna as well as a Native Hawaiian.

Shout out a fellow kumu who empowers their students every day!
This is hard. I have been so lucky to be surrounded by amazing kumu who inspire me but if I had to pick just one, it would be Kumu Seleste! Every day, she comes to work with a smile on her face and always puts the keiki first. She has so many amazing ideas to help our keiki grow and finds ways to help those haumāna that don’t quite get it yet. The haumāna love her! I appreciate all her hard work and her genuine care for the haumana and kumu that she works alongside.
